Moonkin: Level 80 Starting Gear

So here’s my plan for minimum effort to obtain a nice starter set of spellpower items to heal and dps at level 80:

Since I will of course also be running an instance every once in a while each and any of these items can be replaced by what I can obtain through instances. I just hate to depending on winning a roll on an item that doesn’t even drop every time on a boss.

What I am wondering while looking through items: is there no Hit Rating + Spellpower Gear???

The most stressful will probably be to camp the AH for the BoE items and get to Revered with the Kirin’Tor. Currently I am half-way to honored thanks to the Cooking quest. We have already finished most of the other quests that award Kirin’Tor faction. So I’ll have to champion them at 80. I have no idea how hard the Sons of Hodir reputation will be to earn …

Update: I already managed to snag the boots and the off-hand and I am finally making my new Alchemist’s trinket. I decided that in direct comparison for “leveling items” I will keep my S3 Wrists and S3 Chest instead of choosing the items selected above. I’ll see if any upgrades come when they came :)

Deterministic Blue Spellpower Gear for Druids

Yashima

I call this gear list “deterministic” because all the items are otainable with a (admittedly more or less) measurable amount of effort. When I plan out my gear for a character I usually look at available items in a certain order based on how much effort and most importantly luck is involved. Items that need luck are last on my list. On top of my list are items that I can easily obtain by solo-ing a fixed amount of content.

What kind of gear is qualifies as deterministic?

  • Quest Rewards – you complete the quest and get the reward, this is the easiest and most often fastest way to get a reward.
  • Faction Rewards – you can repeat dailies or run instances until you reach the desired level and then you can go to the quartermaster and buy the reward. In Northrend several factions have dailies that reward large chunks of faction points and easily get you up to the desired level. For other factions you just wear their tabard and go to an instance.
  • Some Currency Based Rewards – you do whatever is required (usually killing bosses in instances or doing repeatable quests) to obtain the currency and buy the reward. Note: PvP rewards are currency based but I am not going to list them here for two reasons: 1) because there is PvP gear for every class and spec nowadays and 2) PvP depends on too many other people that you have no control over … so there is luck in getting good groups involved unless you farm pre-mades.

Rewards that need a little luck or patience:

  • Crafted Rewards – farming most crafting mats is not quite straightforwad, since most drops have a less than 100% drop chance there is always some luck involved. Crafting mats that can be obtained solo-ing or on the AH are absolutely on my list. Once you have the mats you need to find a crafter but for many items this is not impossible to find someone in your guild or among your friends or get referred to a crafter
  • BoE Random World Drops – can usually be bought on the AH for more or less reasonable prices – getting money is deterministic by doing dailies …

What gear does not qualify?

  • BoP Random Drops from instance bosses. 1) you often need luck to find a group for the instance your drop is from, 2) you need to be lucky to have the boss drop the desired item and 3) you need to win the roll on that item. This is the type of gear that either requires a lot of effort and much time or a lot of luck. That is why I don’t really focus on boss drops until I have figured out what kind of equipment I can get from other avenues. I have rarely “farmed” an instance for a drop …

So without much more discussion, here are a few items that should be attainable for most Druids:

Blue Quest Rewards (search)

Faction Based Gear

Crafted by Leatherworkers (search)

Crafter by Jewelcrafters (search)

Crafted by Tailors (search)

Crafted by Blacksmiths

Bought with currency (search)

BoE World Drops (search)

When I get to 80 and have all the Blues I want, I will make an upgraded listed with nice purplies.

Just an Update: Idols … forgotten because they rarely contain spellpower which I used to filter out feral gear ;) The best for leveling balance druids should be available through Venture Coins: Idol of Arcane Terror.

Leveling Again

Borean Tundra, From Screenshots 2008

So while waiting for Wrath to finally come out, we were so excited it spilled over on twitter and the blogosphere – and it was a fun event to follow on blogs and twitter all over the world. Right now everything’s a bit calmer while people are still leveling and exploring.

We did play a lot these last couple of days. We managed to get to 71 and then completed both Utgarde Keep and the Nexus. Both instances were very nice and I was happy to be able to go in as a healer while specced Moonkin. This is very important for me that I can use my leveling DPS spec for something besides …

I mostly quested in Borean Tundra with Tenobaal who is a hunter. We also discovered that there is lots of fun to be had in the Tundra with the herds of Rhinos wandering around there … with two people you can easily AoE herd after herd and if one of the two is a professional Skinner he can easily max out his skill and make tons of gold on the side – unless he wants to keep the Leather of course – but Teno didn’t.

One of the things that impressed me the most was the entry into the Howling Fjord by ship and doing the first “welcome” quest. We have reports from several other people that the same thing happened to them as happened to little Yáshimá … they ran out of the gate combating the wolves and attackers and killed many more than the 12 needed for the quest and kept fighting until they died. This is what I always thought quests should feel like – you get so engrossed in this dynamic fight with lots of NPCs involved on either side that you keep at it when you’re already done.

If you haven’t gone yet – go to Howling Fjord, enjoy the Disney-like ride on the ship and then take the first quest you get and just run with it! Try not to die – if you do you’re in good company though ;)

What is weird about leveling again at the same time as everyone else – leveling alts is different – is the queueing for quest mobs the ganking for getting to quest mobs first and my re-ignited hatred for Rogues.

Meet the Death Knight

Last night I did one more important thing:

I deleted the Level 19 place holder and created my Death Knight. So here she is posing in front of a certain big dark guy with some big-ass sword in his hand – he was to big to fit the picture.

After logging in to pose, I went to bed. My plan is to to do Death Knight intro sequence this coming week-end and then see if I want to continue playing the class.

I am not ready to disclose the name just yet since I want to do the intro by myself and without guildchat I think – this is of course subject to change :)

Installing …

Wrath of the Lich King CEJust a second ago I upgraded my account … and now I am watching the install bar move very very slowly.

And as you can see: We were successfull. We got ourselves not one but two CEs!

I was at the shop earlier this evening to buy something else – what a coincidence – and asked if they had any “unreserved” CEs left and the guy said they were the store with the largest contingent of CEs in all of Germany … they had 400 and only 75 of those were reserved! So we guessed we had a pretty good chance to get some. We went there at 11p.m. waited for a very very boring hour while listening to people talk about WoW, screaming “For the Horde” (not us…) … then there was a lot of pushing and shoving and then we were in line at one of the cash registers and it was obvious we were in a good position to get our CEs. Just when there was only one more guy in front of us Teno decided he wanted a CE as well ;)

Big Big thanks to the BA chat because that’s where I found out that that store was open at midnight today!

More Photos.

PS: no I didn’t make an unboxing video like some other people, I am still mostly feral and it was all “pounce, mangle, shred, rake, rip”

Can’t play today?

Well you can get a nice view of the battles going on in Azeroth as the Lich King is increasing his attacks. The following movies done by well-known WoW bloggers Leafshine and Aurik will help you out if you can’t make it online today:

Thanks for these impressions.

Chilling on twitter …

For those of you who have not yet heard about it, the Azeroth celebrities have taken to using twitter to communicate their evil plans to the world and taunt the heroes who oppose them. The Lich King himself has already been teletubbied.

7 Todos before Wrath

With patch 3.0 coming out any week now and maybe only six more weeks till Wrath comes out (if that 4th November date is still the latest rumor, update: looks like Nov 13 now), the time until the addon hits is finally starting to look finite. Are you still looking forward to the addon or are you frustrated by the changes coming up to your favorite class?

I am looking forward to the addon. I am excited by all the changes coming. But then I am not raiding and many of the changes just make life easier for the casual (not raiding) hardcore (playing too much at times) that I am.  So I’ve been thinking a lot what kind of activities in the game make the most sense to prepare for the addon. What kind of stuff will make my gaming experience smoother later on?

Here’s my list of things to do to prepare for Wrath:

1. Death Knights: Reserve a character slot and a name for your Death Knight – you will play one, right? You might also prepare some big bags – DKs don’t come with 18-slot bags, or do they?

2. Inscription: Reserve a profession slot on a high level character and collect enough herbs to easily level Inscription. If you don’t have a herbalist already, consider leveling that.

3. Achievements: Prepare for any achievements you really want to have quickly (f.e. explore old zones for the Explorer title)

4. Gold, Gold Gold: Hoard money, because you’ll need it, for example sell off old materials that won’t be needed as much after Wrath comes out

5. Honor: if you are a PvPer farm Honor now (not sure how Arena Points will translate)

6. Leveling: finish leveling those alts because you’ll soon be leveling your Main again. Consider stopping at level 60, because experience needed to level to 70 will be reduced …

7. Talents: Look at the new talents for you Main’s class and try to decide what kind of spec you’ll want to level to 80.
