Spy Technique vs Bitch Mode

We were questing in Grizzly Hills yesterday and I was in follow-mode while chatting with a guildie about whatever issue there was.

We’re just killing some mobs, I suppose it was a killquest. Killing mobs, chatting …. thinking about what needed to be done for dinner … then I get another whisper:

Someplayer to me: “You doin’ this quest Blablabla?”
Me to Someplayer: “Can you please ask Teno, I am just following right now!”
Someplayer to me: “But you have group lead!”
Me thinks: “Wtf?” (he was right)

He kept nagging me. I gave the lead to Teno. Then bitch-mode kicked in, I hit the Starfall button, pulled all the mobs in the area, waited a while and died.

By then the conversation with the guildie was over and I proceeded to tell Mr. Get-On-My-Nerves-When-I-Am-Busy “Sorry what was it you were asking? I was chatting with someone else!”

I am really not a very social player when I am playing while my mind is not really on the game. I just want to be left alone.

He should have caught the hint after my first answer that it was not a good time to try and want something off me. It was not even as if there were not enough mobs or we were AoE-Pulling with Starfall before that. He just wanted to get the killquest over with faster. I kind of understand that …

When I am bitchy I need to put up /dnd I guess. But most people think that their specific problem needs to be adressed right then and I rarely see people respect the /dnd tag.

My real question is: how did he see I was group leader? Or was it just a good guess? I asked Teno and they had not been whispering before.

And why on earth is everyone always whispering me? Because I play a female toon?

Shortly after the “incident” I logged off.

Me to Someplayer: “I need to log off now, bye!”

/g Bye all!

Visiting Dalaran the first time

From Screenshots 2008

Last night we reached our first big goal in Wrath: our mains dinged 74. We were questing in Howling Fjord doing the quest line for the Worg where you have to meditate in the mountains … very beautiful.

Why was this a big goal? We did not want to get a port to Dalaran, we just wanted to go there together with our mains when it was “time”.

So shortly after midnight Yashima and Tenobaal set foot into Dalaran for the first time. We had heard lots of stories about it, seen a few pictures and saw a bit of the design process on the making-of DvD. But no story is like the *cough* “real thing”.

We spent nearly an hour exploring the city, the sewers, looking for portals, a new home (we reside at “A Hero’s Welcome” now) and playing with our minipets and other fluff with the Horde.

A lovely city and I am glad we waited and took our time to go there, it truly is The Magical Kingdom of Dalaran.

Public Embarassment

Many of you will know the dailies of the Netherwing faction especially those who would like to be flying around on a Netherdrake. Actually I fell in love with Netherdrakes when I did the quests in Nagrand where you fly around on one.

So once I had my Swift Flight Form I decided to start questing for the Netherwing. It started easy enough with some herb farming. Then more and more quests opened up – some good (Booterang anyone?) and some bad (farming poison glands sucks) until I finally got to the point where I could do the Earning my Wings quest and was then able to race the Netherwing champions for the title of the “Top Orc”.

I did the first race versus the Oldie McOld. It was easy but something new. Then I did the second race. A bit harder. The third race already took me two tries. So I raced. I finished all the races but the last two. I kept failing to win against Captain Mulverick. I got frustrated and stopped trying.

Then I took a long long break from WoW before I continued questing for the Netherwing.

I started helping the Netherwing again after I finally made myself get the Mats for the Soul Cannon quest and the Subdue the Subduer (great fun that one as well, I love quests that use flight …). After going to the Netherwing area to turn in the quest I remembered those unfinished races.

I tried myself versus Captain Mulverick and voilà: I won on the first try! I was so excited that I decided it was time to challenge Captain Skyshatter and … he decided it was a good idea to announce it to the whole zone via “yell” that I was going to race him:

“Prepare a funereal pyre! Yashima  has challenged Skyshatter!

Lovely. I got whispers with “Good Luck” from random people in the zone. I thought it was quite nice. At that moment I didn’t realize what that meant.

That last race is hard and of course I failed the first try. I tried again.

“Prepare a funereal pyre! Yashima  has challenged Skyshatter!

Oh noes and failed even faster.

On the third retry I realized something:

“Prepare a funereal pyre! Yashima  has challenged Skyshatter!

It was absolutely embarrassing to be publicly dissed for failing the quest again and again. While I usually don’t have trouble trying forever to succeed at a quest, I did have trouble having my repeated failure announced to everyone every single time.

I sat there for 5 minutes while chatting with a random person who told me he needed four tries and I was thinking of quitting. But then I made up my mind and tried again.

“Prepare a funereal pyre! Yashima  has challenged Skyshatter!

Another epic failure. So I whined to the guild how embarrassing my public failure was and that I was giving up after the next try.

“Prepare a funereal pyre! Yashima  has challenged Skyshatter!

But that try went great. I didn’t get hit by meteors, I was able to follow through the endless number of u-turns he does and I was declared “Top Orc” just as publicly as my failures before were public.

The race was great and the whole experience was fun. Even the embarrassment because it is so rare that such things happen. I want more stuff like this. I can’t quite describe what it is about this that fascinates me so much but it is definitely among the better content.

I love when people accidentally pull Doomlord Kazzak and he starts yelling loud enough for everyone to hear on Hellfire Peninsula.

Give me more such things!

Silly Dailies

This morning I did the “Gaining the Advantage” daily with Thalya.

It is a bit boring to do it the traditional way and thinking of coming achievements I decided to go hand to hand with the Clefthoofs in Nagrand. Of course it takes a bit longer and yes I am glad she has Manashield and Ice Barrier and I do pull with Frostbolt. But for the rest I am wrangling the Clefthoofs to their death with my tiny gnome. (I know it really is the Molten Armor that is killing them *g*)

So far she has come from 0 to 281.

Oh and I had a blue drop. A nice shield: Shield of the Wayward Footman

I got a lot of blue drops lately and even an epic drop (nice axe for my huntress when she is in her mid-40s)

Explorer

Map of Blood Elf starting areaI am not usually the explorer type in a game. I explore to a certain degree but up to now I was not striving for complete exploration of the world map. But now there will be a title for having explored everything. Since I’ll never be a Champion of the Naaru and since I doubt I’ll be a Salty Yashima ever (Sunday Fishing Extravaganza is just not meant for me to win), I am thinking of  going for something easier.

So yesterday I went exploring. Luckily I also staretd collecting herbs for whichever of my characters is going to learn Inscription (I am not going to be late on a new profession again like I did with Jewelcrafting) so I could advance on two goals at the same time.

Here are a few pictures I took while exploring the Blood Elf starting areas. Besides the pretty and – mostly unknown – scenery I really enjoyed the Blood Elf theme music.

2 Stealth to Ikiss (Heroic)

Map to Sethekk Halls Stealth Runs:
So that’s what I did after Kara last night. Mr. Feral whom I had been complaining to, that we had not played together for quite some time asked if I still had the Heroic Daily for Ikiss open. Of course I had. I rarely do instances and even less often I get the Heroic Daily.

We have done this before. Though usually one of us was specced Resto at the time. It should not have taken us an hour to down Ikiss. I messed up a bit being rather tired. Still: two feral druids downed Ikiss on Heroic mode last night.

And you can do it, too!

Here’s how:

Preparation and General Hints

You both should have the Talent that improves your Stealth level. Otherwise bring a Rogue who can use “Distract” (?) to well distract the mobs that might see through your Stealth. You can bring your Master’s Treads or similar Stealth enhancing boots. Do not bring Stealth potions, you need to unstealth to use them anyway.

Get naked, you don’t need to fight any mobs anyhow and if you are seen you will at least not have rep-costs.

There are a lot of pairs of guards at entrances and exits to and from rooms in the instance. I tried to paint them all in the map as well as I remember them. These guards will turn to face you if you get close to them. Do not worry: they turn but they have not yet discovered you. Stop moving. They will eventually return to their original position and you can continue.

The yellow dots are the “easy” guards. Just pass at the center between them. The red ones are harder and should be handled very carefully. You must be at the exact center when you pass them or try to pass behind them. These may take practice to avoid! I had a human guide for my first run, you made need several tries to get it right.

Stealth Part I

Several pairs of guards to avoid and a few easy patrols. The first two pairs of guards are easy. Pass the first room either on the left-hand wall or right through the center.

The hardest is the pair of guards at the exit of the first room. Pass them at the center if you have improved Stealth. They will turn to face you. If one of you does not have improved Stealth they may use the short time they are turned to pass behind the guard into the hallway.

Stealth at the right-hand wall of the second room and pass behind the guard the the exit. Immediately look for the bird patrolling there.

Pass to the left or right of the guards, guarding the Syth’s room and immediately press against the wall or you will aggro the boss.

Boss 1: Syth

Now the important but easy part is to get around the first boss and his Stealth Detection. He’s the reason you can’t just keep trying this because you need a Battle Rez.

  1. Check for the bird patrolling and start right after he left the boss’ room.
  2. Have one (nekkid) player Stealth into the room turning left. He will be detected. Use sprint and turn into Bear when the boss starts hitting you. Try to die in good view of the exit of the room and close enough to be rezzed but not too close or your companion will be discovered, too.
  3. So while one player keeps the boss busy, the other takes the right-hand route and sprints – in Stealth! – through the room to the other side. There should be enough time to get there. Hide behind the doorway until the boss resets.
  4. Rezz your companion and continue stealthing

Stealth Part II

The next room has quite a few patrolling mobs in it. With improved Stealth you can easily take the route through the center carefully avoiding the moving creatures. Without improved Stealth you should take the route along the left wall. There’s a ramp leading up to the second level of the instance. There’s a patrol on the ramp avoid it by hiding on some of the outcrops.

Sneak behind the first set of door guards on the upper level. You will next see a bunch of non-elite birds. These are better killed. One Druid tanks them the other heals. Do not forget to put on some armor before the pull. The Tank should start aggro-ing them with Hurricane. That should be enough to get ahead on aggro for the Healer to do his job.

The room behind the birds is a bit tricky as you will have to avoid the patrolling mobs again. There’s a route right through the center of the room though.

The next room is already the Raven God’s room. This is very easy to pass through, just a few easy patrols to avoid and the guards at the exit.

There is just one more difficult group awaiting you before Ikiss. The last set of guards consists of four guards plus a patrolling bird at the entrance of Ikiss’ room. The really scary part is that you have to wait till the bird passes to the left side and then hurry into the spot right between the guards, just far enough that the bird will not detect you anymore and the guards not yet. The guards will turn to face you however – they often do – just stop moving until they return to their original position and then pass between them to the left to hide behind some of the columns.

You and your companion are now alone with Ikiss. Decide who tanks and who heals, put on your Armor and do it.

Boss 2: The Fight with Ikiss

This fight is easiest with a Resto and a Feral specced Druid. You do not need incredible high-end gear to pull this of.

Tank Gear: I tanked last night with 415 defense, 24k armor and 13k life. If you have tanked Heroics or Kara with your gear before you should be fine. You may want to try and up your Attack Power a bit because the Tank will have to burn Ikiss down.

Healing Gear: as a Resto I have healed this fight with 1200 +heal and about 80mp5. Mr. Feral has about 1500 +heal and managed to pull this off Feral specced! You may want to bring some Mana Potions though.

The fight goes much like a standard Ikiss fight I guess only it takes longer. I believe it took us about 6-7 minutes on average.

Tanking Ikiss

  • Position: Tank Ikiss just beneath to the upper left column (see map), so your healer can dance behind the column to avoid getting sheeped (unless he’s a tree and sheep immune anyway).
  • Abilities to use: Basically as a Tank you have to keep up your Debuffs: Mangle, Lacerate, Demo Roar and Fairy Fire. I also use Maul when I have excess Rage. Try to keep your heal for when your Healer is sheeped. Use your Trinkets!
  • Avoid Damage: At 75%, 50% and 25% (about) Ikiss casts an Arcane Explosion. When he starts casting run behind one of the columns to avoid that damage. You may have been slowed by Ikiss: just shift to get rid of that. After the cast Ikiss ports to one player.
  • Regain Aggro: Here’s the true challenge of the fight: you have to regain aggro quickly or your healer is dead (you may want to have a Barkskin+Rebirth macro for that case). Ikiss is not Taunt immune! You may be used to Taunt immune mobs from Kara etc., do not forget to taunt him if he targets your healer.
  • Slowly burn him down
  • Try to give the healer your Innervate during the second Arcane Explosion

Healing on Ikiss

  • Conserve Mana. If you don’t have enough mana regen start using Potions as early as possible so you can make the most out of your potion cooldown.
  • Let yourself get sheeped to Heal up, put enough HoTs on your Tank so he’ll survive the Sheep phase. You can move behind the column when Ikiss starts to sheep. He’ll try again and be rather too busy going after you instead of your tank.
  • Avoid Damage: Arcane Explosion will hurt you just as much as the tank. Shift out of Tree to get behind a column you may be too slow otherwise
  • Stop healing after the Arcane Explosion, you do not want aggro right now!
  • Remember your trinkets and cooldowns!
  • Stay cool, don’t panic (I always do *g*)

Rogues on Ikiss

  • If you brought a rogue and your healer is a tree, the rogue will probably be sheeped for the whole fight and forget to evade the Arcane Explosion and die.
  • If your healer is not a tree the rogue will not always be sheeped but he will probably die.
  • If the rogue is not sheeped: do damage while you live!
  • Bandage up if you manage to avoid the Arcane Explosion, there’s not much mana to heal Rogues

Finale: Loot
After some time Ikiss will be dead and you richer :) He usually drops 2 blues and an epic item plus the Primal Nether the crafters will want and the Badge of Justice (3 if you have the Daily). If you brought an Enchanter (Mr. Feral is ^^) you’ll be even richer. Port home and do it again tomorrow.

Admittedly it took us quite long yesterday: I aggro-ed Syth early because I didn’t realize we had already come to his room. I died on the 4 guards right before Ikiss and had to be rezzed and I messed up our first try on Ikiss because of I forgot Demo Roar and Mr. Feral, my Healer, died to bad luck (or bad gear, it was a resisted Growl). We spend about one hour on that run. It can go as fast as 25-30 minutes if you do everything right.

Have fun!

winter veil & duels

screenshot_140not much time to play lately, too much going on in preparation for xmas.

On monday night we had our guild christmas event including duels, snowball fights and a weird raid on the tauren city. Someone already posted a few pictures on his new flickr account. I have not even looked at my screenies yet.

I did a duel against another tree druid. After what seemed like forever I just ran away and quit, frankly this duel will only end if one of the trees falls asleep. Maybe if he had worn his really good cat gear he could have vanquished me. After the duel he told me that he used Teleport:Moonglade in the Arena the other day because only he and another resto-druid were standing.

I too did my 10 Arena matches this week. I am paired up with a fire mage for 2vs2. I still have to learn a lot. But we won consistently against teams without a healer and we lost consistently against teams with a healer. I really do not know what is worse: a paladin, a priest or another resto-druid. I hate warriors ;) I am getting good at running away again.

There’s more to tell, but I need to get back to work.

player created adventures

I have had more than one discussion about how nice it would be to have player created content in the game. Of course there are a lot of pitfalls for such a feature and so we do not have this.

Last night I logged on for a bit and saw that one of the guild’s warlocks was in Shattrath and asked if he would summon my little druid to Outland so I could take her to the Leatherworker trainer to learn how to make Knothide Leather from Scraps – which fill up my bank. At first he didn’t feel like looking for helpers which I totally understand. But all of a sudden he goes “log on your druid alt” and just a minute later I am standing in Shattrath amongst 3 of my guildmates – except my druid alt is not in the guild ;)

So next I had to get to Honor Hold. Taking the flight route is a) boring and b) I didn’t know I could. So my plan was to ghost travel to Honor Hold and ressurrect at the graveyard. Instead the Warlock(70) and the Priest(61) offered to escort me to Honor Hold. It took us about 20 minutes to get there. My little druid is 39 and she aggroed every single ravager on the way and several wolves and enough of the demon pigs to hold a big demon barbecue party. But I got to Honor Hold alive after a very interesting adventure. Best escort quest ever.

To my horror I discovered I had not been to the Leatherworker teacher for about 20 or more skillpoints and had to be about 15 recipes and … no gold. But the nice Priest(ess) helped me out there as well. Well now I have a 39 druid I can use to turn scraps into leater. And in just one more level I can finally spec her for Moonkin

black rock for fun

Another day/evening of fun was had.

My first attempt at the PvP Daily with Yashima yielded the desired result: a secure win in Alterac Valley. Not quite as expected anymore as it used to be for some time.

Then I went questing with my little mage for a bit. Shortly before I knew I would be logging out, our own Cpt PvPowers was complaining (no really) in guildchat how he and his level 56 mage girl-friend had wiped in Blackrock Depths. He is protection now and just couldn’t do enough damage to those healing mobs … since I am the official guild mentor for his girl-friend – she just joined us last week – I decided it would be a good time to play a little bit with her and went to help them with Thalya (my mage). I enjoy bombing mobs of any level so the mage is a good character to help out lowbies.

Hilarious chaos ensued … I think I secretly always wanted to do that, run through BRD and aggro all those mobs at once. That’s what the paladin did, collected them around himself and then we started bombing. Does anyone remember the horrible room before Lord Argelmar with his golems? The one with the many many big mob groups containing some non-elite and the tons of patrols and those Arcane Smiths?

“You two wait here and do nothing!” Just moments later we saw the paladin running zickzack amongst the columns followed by a true mob of mobs. I have never wished more that I could have made a movie of something in-game. He nearly died as well …

Too bad that after accidentally aggro-ing the tavern I had to leave, or I could have completed my Molten Core Attunement for the mage.
